Nehru Coat

In the 1960s the western world was totally swayed by the infectious charm of the Indian culture and philosophy. The popularity of the eastern culture style rose to another stage when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru- the first Prime Minister of free India was featured on the Vogue magazine wearing a bandh gale ka coat which was an adaptation of the achkan and sherwani and is popularly known as Nehru Coat now. The coat is tailored to be hip-length with buttons all the way down, along with mandarin collars. The style was particularly worn by the Kashmiri Pandits with the combination of churidars and a rose bud to complete it.

The famous musician Sammy Davis Jr. claimed to own about two hundred pieces of the Nehru Coat in his closet. The English band, The Beatles and Monkees too were spotted wearing the coat in a few of their stage performances. The legendary American singer, Frank Sinatra, also flaunted the Nehru coat quite a few times.

When Nehru was keen about the airfields in the Nicobar Islands, he invited the tribal leader of Car Nicobar named Edward Kutchat and succeeded in convincing the initially apprehensive Kutchat for the proposal.  Interestingly Edward Kutchat asked for the jacket that Mister Nehru was wearing in return.
