The Balinese welcome the New Year in a fascinating manner by observing silence for a span of 24 hours. Yes, you read that right! The name of this celebration is Nyepi. Purification of the mind and soul along with the environment is the base of this commemoration. A week before Nyepi, the villages in Bali begin to get together theirogoh ogoh – a monster like sculpture representing the evil spirit. The ceremony begins with Melasti – a cleansing ritual for the people and religious artifacts performed alongside water. The morning begins with a prayer called Pengrupekan where the natives go around houses chanting and beating large pots and bowls to ward off evil. In the evening the people parade to the Banjar town hall of the village) with their ogoh-ogoh and burn them. Finally the day of silence arrives and the island paradise follows a set of ancient rules praying for a peaceful year ahead. Entire Bali shuts down with no one moving on the streets, no usage of electricity (except hospitals); even the airport is off for the day and not even the internet has its way! One can only hear the chirping of the birds, waves of the ocean, tree leaves rustling, wind through the wind chimes; leaving out the hum of the motorbikes and cars honking. |
