Keiro No Hi: Respect the Aged Day

Keiro No Hi is ‘Respect the Aged Day’ in Japan. Japan has the largest number of centenarians in the world. On this day the Japanese commemorate the elderly to express respect and gratitude for their contribution to society and of course their long lives. This day also celebrates the beauty and the efforts that lead to longevity.

The acknowledgement of this day was initiated by a small town called Hyogo Prefecture which is now known as Taka. Over the years the holiday gained popularity across the country and was hence pronounced as a national holiday in the 1966. Earlier it used to be celebrated on September 15th but from 2003 the celebrations are held on the third Monday of September.

Keiro No Hi is carried out with zeal as neighbours distribute Obento- boxed lunches. The large cities host fitness competitions and shows for the aged to enjoy the day to the fullest. In smaller towns and villages Keirokai shows are executed by youngsters and school children for the elderly followed by lunch, tea and sweets.
